High Performance: The Path Less Traveled.
Marquette Rail exists to do something very different in the rail freight transportation industry. We have chosen to follow the path less traveled: that of the high performance organization modeled by industry leaders like Southwest Airlines.
Southwest became the world’ s most successful airline (by any measure) by turning conventional wisdom on its head. By consciously priortizing people first, customers second, and shareholders third, it has created more shareholder value and more satisfied customers than any other airline in history.
Likewise, at Marquette Rail we apply our experience in developing high performance, employee-owned organizations based on the Southwest model to create unparalleled value in an industry not particularly known for its vision and innovation. This translates to true lasting value for our employee-owners, for our customers, for our strategic partners, and for the communities we serve.
"Simple, clear purpose and principles
give rise to complex, intelligent behavior. Complex rules and regulations
give rise to simple, stupid behavior."

Our Purpose:
Our purpose at Marquette Rail is to be the world's best feeder railroad.
Our Mission:
Our mission at Marquette Rail is the development of empowered
employee-owners delivering an unparalleled customer experience.
Our Core Principles:
- Mutual Respect and Support – Team building at Marquette Rail is based on the simple principle of the Golden Rule – we treat others with the
same respect and dignity with which we would prefer to be treated
ourselves. In all dealings, it is of
paramount importance to support each other as teammates, and promote
each other’s personal and professional development. Each and every member of the Marquette team has the right to expect a workplace free of bias, prejudice or harassment based on race, sex, religion, national origin, age or disability. All employee-owners have the right to expect a workplace
free from any form of harassment.
- Servant Leadership – At Marquette Rail, we believe leadership is a role, not a job description. We expect each member of our team to lead each other, our customers and our industry in a culture of service. As an employee-owned organization, there is no such thing as "not my job" – we count on every team member to do whatever it takes to get the job done. When in doubt on a business decision, the guiding principle must be "how will this affect the customer, and how would I feel if I were in their shoes?" Then, we must make the decision to do the right thing. At Marquette, leaders are there to serve the team and facilitate its success, and will never discipline team members for making a reasonable decision in favor of a customer. We strive to create an environment where our employee-owners truly think, feel and act like owners. Yet this does not mean that all decisions are open to debate. Decision-making is a primary role of our leaders, and they are expected to solicit employee-owners' input on decisions that will affect them.
- Open, Honest Communication – We believe that better decisions come from broad access to our company's critical information. We therefore commit to each and every team member to share company information openly, so that they know where they stand as employee-owners as well as important members of our team. This information is highly sensitive and vital to our success, and it is therefore absolutely necessary that it be handled confidentially. In sharing this information, we require personal initiative and individual decision making of every team member. Finally, we require absolute honesty and integrity of our team members in dealing with company issues, customers, company property and each other. When called for, we must feel free to "tell the hard truth."
- Positive, Healthy Working Environment – Success results from treating people fairly and promoting positive, healthy and safe behaviors in an environment where individuals are free to be themselves. Individual growth and professional development are encouraged by recognizing and celebrating positive behaviors and accomplishments. Above all, our jobs should be fun - enjoying what we do and the camaraderie of our workplace is essential to delivering an unparalleled customer experience. We attract and hire individuals who fit this unique culture. In those occasions when we hire people who don't fit our culture, we are all better off by having the courage to say "Goodbye" and parting on good terms.
